Inspiration from the Master Henry Moore

Henry Moore (1898–1986) is widely regarded as one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century, whose groundbreaking work revolutionized the art of sculpture and left an indelible mark on modern art. Born in Castleford, England, Moore’s early fascination with the human form and nature laid the foundation for a career that would span more than six decades. His sculptures, often monumental in scale, are celebrated for their organic shapes, abstraction, and deep connection to natural forms.

Moore’s most iconic works are his large-scale public sculptures, which can be found in cities and parks around the world. His Reclining Figures—abstract representations of the human body—became one of his hallmark styles. These reclining forms evoke a sense of calm, strength, and timelessness, often taking on the contours of natural landscapes. For Moore, the reclining figure was a motif that allowed him to explore the relationship between the human form and the natural world. His sculptures often feel like they belong in their environments, as though they’ve grown out of the earth itself.

I am deeply inspired by his work, with his exploration of organic forms and the human figure. Moore often used found objects like stones, bones, and shells to create preliminary works, allowing the natural textures and shapes to guide his artistic vision. This resonates with my own approach to sculpture, where I also use found materials like stones, bones, and sticks to create figurative pieces.

His ability to blend abstraction with nature’s raw beauty, while focusing on the interplay of form and space, has greatly influenced my work. Like Moore, I am drawn to the idea of letting materials themselves shape the creative process, resulting in sculptures that are both grounded in nature and rich with emotional depth.
